Whether or not…”Genocide”
The US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has announced his government’s decision to recognize atrocities against So-called Rohingya Muslims at the hands of the military in Burma in 2017. I am one of the scholars internationally dealing with the deep cleavages between Buddhist and Muslim communities in northern Rakhine State and the wartime Ethnic violence in early 1940s. A famous historian, John Christie even called the event of Rakhine people driven out from their ancestral land an ethnic cleansing. It is sure that the writings in Social and International medias have produced a distorted picture. However, I am not arguing over the declaration. But the State Department and UNHCR should examine what the scholars have written about the historical development of that area. Many historical facts remained to be considered.
